Company History
Hugh J Boswell started business as a stockbroker and insurance broker in a single room near the centre of Norwich in 1906, at the age of 23. In 1934, Hugh was joined by his son John, then aged 22, who was anxious to expand the insurance broking side which was his particular interest. However, the following year found him in sole charge of the business when his father died at the age of 52. The year after, the business was incorporated as a limited company.
After the Second World War, the insurance business expanded rapidly, particularly on the commercial side, resulting in several moves to larger premises. In 1964 the business was purchased by a public company which provided valuable experience in dealing with large corporate risks.
In 1984, the company returned to private ownership under a management buyout, retaining a large proportion of the corporate clients on the books at the time.
In 1991, it was clear that the company needed larger offices and in the following year acquired and renovated the Carrow Hill premises which remains our Head Office today.
In 2013, the business was purchased by former Directors Nick Chambers, Peter Foster, and existing Director Ashley Minors. In order to build on their journey in 2019 Hugh J Boswell engaged external partner Ethos Broking to assist the team in taking the business to the next level.
Drawing on broad and well-established expertise across our collective, and with the support of the Ethos Broking team, we approach current and future challenges as a unit, allowing us to continually assess and enhance our service.
Our association with Ethos Broking gives us greater prominence in the insurance market, meaning access to exclusive policy wordings and niche products while remaining independent and accessible to our clients.
